ALL WELCOME TO OPENING CELEBRATIONS THIS FRIDAY 6-8 pm at the Compendium Gallery 909 High st, Armadale (Melbourne).

The title of this body of work is derived from the literary term kill your darlings, meaning to kill off excess in the written form. To consider what is important and then to ruthlessly trim back. Words, characters and anything else no longer serving the core storyline or plot has to go.

I thought about this in the broader context of life itself and how every now and then it is necessary to do the same. To consider even the things and ways of being you may have come to love and are attached to under a microscope and to then in a large scale, broad sweep, let what no longer serves you go. It requires a cosmic effort to push against the inertia that underpins the day to day and to change. To let go, to burn away, to move forward. Often we only do this when our lives force this action upon us in some way.

I then thought of this concept and how it also applies to a creative life, how we can so often fall into familiar and comfortable ways of working and staying within safe an expected parameters, but then how counter to true creative expression this actually is, that in order to not stagnant you have to sacrifice the familiar and predictable patterns to push out of your comfort zone artistically, for it is in this space of not knowing that the “magic” happens, that you get that fail or flush adrenaline happening and new ideas and inspiration can flood through.

So, this has been part of my journey this last year, considering not only the aspects of my personal life that don’t serve me, but my creative life as well. Allowing myself to explore new figurative elements and new ways of storytelling within my paintings and my practice overall.

The killing of my cosmic darlings.

To capture this series I have worked with Georgie Morrison (photographer) and Edvard Christie (Film) I have included a link to the film below.
