This book is full of poetry, 378 pages to be exact. However, it is also something of an art book. Within it are paintings, photographs, personal notes and longer written pieces, it is intended to be a collectible version of the paperback edition.
If you are new to my work, this book is the perfect introduction to some of the concepts, narratives, philosophies and ideas that underpin my arts practice. There are personal experiences in my poetry, that I know to be universal, in this way I feel that by sharing them they can be helpful, comforting and uplifting, albeit via the somewhat safe and ambiguous lens of poetry, one reason I love it as genre.
The title of the book Poetry Buried in Geometry has come to be something of a unifying concept across all of my art forms. It refers to a metaphorical yet universal meeting point. The middle, the centre, the place that sits between higher wisdom, (the cosmic and universal view) and the grounding presence of the earth, (the body, the organic and the natural world). The place between the poetry and the geometry. I am always practicing deep looking and engaged observation, in a way it has come to feel like a form of meditation. To seek the ever changing connection between all things. There is something new to learn always and I have come to understand that it is via contrast that we experience life. Everything we seek to understand is found in the gaps and in the idiosyncrasies. In the points of difference. In the paradox and in the disparity.
There are many occasions I wake with a fully formed poem arriving, or ideas for other creations delivered directly via a dream.
I have found dreams to be the purest form of liminal/free space that we can access while in our human bodies. In this space between the conscious and the subconscious, the seen and the unseen, the true middle, I have had the most incredible lucid experiences. As well as informing my arts practice they will often heavily influence my inner landscape of emotion and in turn my life’s trajectory. As a result of dreams I have experienced great healing and personal growth. I have also processed deep grief via what I feel whilst in them, to be very real narratives, Grandmother of my Dreams is a poem written after one such dream, as is A Wolf Called Hope.
Thus the architecture of the mind in my experience, is always bringing all the parts of self into coherence. Our inner workings are always seeking balance and if we listen and observe in stillness we can very often be guided in our best way forward. Dreams can hold great wisdom.
I have come to understand that this is why my visual work is largely geometric and architectural. In many ways I am simply giving form to the formless in whatever medium I am working in. Art is just a way to map the subconscious. Geometry for me, is the holding together of inner chaos. It is a scaffolding that exists so that everything else can be felt and moved. The poetry is what sits within that structure. It is the emotion of the idea.
I have just covered some complex inner workings here, but I think though as you read through my book, everything I have touched on will make sense in a felt way. No words needed.
The beauty of poetry is the way it distills complexities down to the essential minimum, its reductive quality. For this reason I find reading poetry a way to quiet the mind.
