It occurred to me today that most of what I write on this blog is for me.. Reminding myself what is true and what is important. I really am my own audience. Being a parent and an artist, and trying to juggle both, leaves me sometimes feeling like I can never do either well. There are simple things though that I have learnt that make my life easier… This is one of them.
“Be the adult”, not a new concept, but something that is often at the forefront of my mind, especially when it comes to interacting with teenagers and toddlers. One example that comes to mind is this; If your children are yelling, don’t raise your voice back at them, stay calm and hold your position (as an adult), and be patient. Remember, children mirror what they see in life. If you yell, you can be sure they will only yell louder.
Another example for me would be, when I have stayed up too late painting and I am tired and so want my children to be more tolerant and patient with me!! Or if I have bitten off more than I can chew work wise and expect them to be okay with having to make do with the left over bits of my time and patience (this will work for only for a small period of time before the “wheels come off the wagon”).
So, when things are difficult some days, I realise it’s because it is me who is being childish (hard to admit). So, there you go.. my little message to me, so I don’t forget to be an adult and the best mum I can be!
What little pep talks have you been giving yourself this week?
